Fast food plans for Firs Parade are rejected

Plans for a new takeaway in Matlock have been rejected amid concerns from residents over noise, smell and possible antisocial behaviour.

The application was to convert a former retail unit on Firs Parade into a late-night takeaway.

However, neighbouring residents had concerns that noise from extractor fans and customers, combined with strong cooking smells, would make life intolerable for them.

At a meeting on Thursday, October 11, Councillors voiced concerns that the residents’ worries had not been addressed and if problems emerged later on it would be a long process to rectify them.

Cllr Sue Burfoot, who forwarded the notion to reject the plans, said: “I think there are far too many unanswered questions to make an approval. We have got to be bold on this one. ”

In response, head of planning Paul Wilson said: “There is nothing within your planning law to reject this scheme and if this goes to appeal – you will lose.”

Despite planning officers insisting that members of the district council had no grounds for refusing the application – councillors voted against the development by a small majority.
