Festival of poetry at Mill

A poetry festival returns to the banks of the River Derwent after its highly-successful launch last year.

Masson Mill in Matlock Bath will host the second annual Derwent Poetry Festival, with esteemed poets from across the British Isles visiting the Dales for the event.

Whitbread Prize-winner Paul Farley will officially declare the festival open, at 6pm on Friday October 17 in the Arkwright Suite.

Then award-winning Derbyshire poet and competition judge Jane Weir will present prizes to the winning poets in this year's Templar Poetry Competitions.

The competitions have attracted hundreds of submissions this year and winners Maggie O'Dwyer, Siobhan Campbell, Mike Barlow and Katrina Naomi will all be reading from their work during the festival.

A wide range of poetic styles will be represented over the weekend with some of the best contemporary poets in Britain performing.

Saturday's events will kick-off at 11am with many of the 39 contributors to the festival's annual anthology, called Buzz, reading at the book's launch event in the archive suite.

Performances will take place throughout the day, with star attractions Tim Liardet and Jane Weir reading from their acclaimed work at 8pm.

And on Sunday, Dawn Wood will introduce poems from her first collection, Quarry, to festival-goers alongside one of last year's winners Pat Borthwick.

The festival will draw to a close at 4.30pm on Sunday with the launch of the 2009 Templar Poetry Competitions.

Stalls, magazine stands and a bookshop with copies of performing poets' work will be open to festival-goers throughout the three days.

Tickets will cost 1-2 for individual events and 6-10 for the entire festival.

The Mercury has three sets of poetry books and three tickets to this event to give away.
