Fight against poachers is on
Riverkeepers said they were winning the battle against poachers, thanks to new infrared night vision devices and the help of the police.
And Haddon Estate claimed an important conviction this week, costing a poacher over 435 in legal fees, personal expenses and fines.
In a new, tough campaign against poaching, wardens used high-tech 'night sights' to spot poachers. Then the criminals exact locations were reported to the police.
Haddon Estate head riverkeeper Warren Slayney said: "This year and last year we've really been trying to clamp down on poaching, and we've got new tactics.
"All the keepers – there's four of us on the Haddon Estate – carry infrared binoculars and night sights now.
"And we are going to spend this summer implementing a 24/7 campaign specifically in and around Bakewell. So we're definitely going to be working hard," added Mr Slayney.
The Haddon riverkeeping team and the Environment Agency used the Freshwater Fisheries Act legislation to bring several prosecutions.
And on Thursday April 24, Michael Anthony McGraw from Stoke on Trent was found guilty of fishing without a licence and unlawful fishing on the River Wye, at Chesterfield Magistrates Court.
The court ordered McGraw to pay 105 compensation for the fish he killed, 150 in costs and 75 in fines.
He also paid 105 to get his car back after it was impounder, and had his fishing tackle destroyed.
