Mataya Flanagan, Natasha Jordan and Megan Critchlow celebrate their GCSE results at St Philip Howard Catholic School in Glossop.

Glossop’s St Philip Howard Catholic School saw a slight decline in GCSE results today (Thursday) on last year, blaming a small year group for the change.

Sixty-seven per cent of the 104 students at the St Mary’s Road school achieved five A* to C grades, and 57 per cent attained five A* to C grades including English and Maths.

Last year’s figures were 87 per cent and 62 per cent respectively.

Headteacher Wendy Steciuk said: “They are as expected for the cohort that we have. We’ve got some fantastic results individually but some students struggled.

“Some were very anxious. My question to them is always: can you do what you what you plan to do? The answer is usually yes, because they’ve always got options.”

She went on to highlight that her school had enjoyed a 100 per cent pass rate in ICT and music.

As there is no sixth form centre at the school, results day marked the last day for pupils.

Ms Steciuk said: “This is the start of their lives. It can seem like make or break for them. It’s a funny day, it is sad, but we’re the kind of school that the students come back and visit. I always say you’ll soon be mums and dads so remember to bring your kids here!”

Star pupils included Phoebe Haggart and Fergal Hanna, who both scored eight A*s and two As, and Isobel Barker and Katie Jones, who both achieved a six A*s and 4As.

But head girl, Kathryn Jones achieved the school’s best results, attaining 10 A*s.

Next month, she will go to study A-levels at Loreto College in Manchester with a view to becoming a doctor in the future.
