GCSEs: New Mills School’s top maths grades

New Mills School pupils celebrate their GCSE results.

New Mills School is celebrating its highest maths GCSE results in years, after 69 per cent of students achieved a grade C or above.

Sixty-five per cent of the 106 year 11 pupils receiving results today (Thursday) at the Church Lane school achieved five or more A* to C grades overall.

Deputy headteacher and maths specialist John Kuczaj said: “As a maths teacher I am delighted to see the commitment and skill of our maths department rewarded.

“This excellent figure is part of an ongoing upward trend for the school and reflects the hard work of the staff.”

He added: “It is really gratifying to celebrate achievements like this, in a year where schools up and down the country are reporting a lot of volatility in GCSE results. There are many smiling faces today as pupils open envelopes that reflect this.”

Star pupils included Ellen Dean, Frances Cope, Sam Foster, Ellen Scotney and Thea Bannister who all achieved ten or 11 A* to A grades.

Frances, who received five A*s and six As, and will be continuing her education at the school’s sixth form, said: “I’m really happy. I was praying for straight As but I didn’t think I’d get them.”

Alex Greensmith, who achieved six A to A* grades was also proud of his results, saying: “This is a really good day.”

While Chukchai Saenborisut was also celebrating exceeding his targets, saying: “I was predicted Ds across the board but I did better in every one. I’m over the moon.” He will stay on at sixth form to study art, media and ICT and hopes to be a graphic designer.

Mr Kuczaj added: “It is enormously rewarding to see that almost one fifth of our results are in the coveted A /A* bracket. This demonstrates that the school stretches our most able students.

“Everyone associated with the school is delighted to celebrate with the students and looks forward to sharing their future successes in sixth form college or the world of work.”
