Getting fit in the great outdoors in New Mills

PEOPLE living in New Mills can now get fit with the help of a new open air gymnasium.

Situated in High Lea Park, the outdoor gymnasium, which received funding from the National Lottery, is free to use and has a range of exercise equipment suitable for people of all ages and abilities.

Cllr Mark Gadd, Chairman of New Mills Town Council’s parks committee, said: “I’m really pleased that we were able to add this facility to the park. It’s so important these days that people are able to take exercise whenever they can find the time and what could be easier than popping into the park. A lot of people of all ages have already tried it out and the feedback has all been very positive.”

The gym is just the latest addition to High Lea Park, which has seen huge improvements during the year with a zip line, basket swing, seven-metre slide, tunnel and the refurbishment of the play fountain among the many changes.

The council’s park manager Stephen Lewis added: “It’s really good to see the proper potential of High Lea Park being realised, and the response from parents, children and young adults has been fantastic.

“We are beginning to get a good range of play equipment and that is attracting large numbers of people into the park, which is great to see. I hope we can continue the work and provide New Mills with the top quality play facilities it needs.”
