Glossop man grew £14k of cannabis at home

A Glossop man who grew up to £14,000 worth of cannabis at home claimed it was for his own personal use to bake cakes, a court heard.

Bernard Morgan admitted producing the class B drug on March 20 at High Peak Magistrates’ Court on Monday.

When police searched his address at Woolley Mill Lane, Tintwistle, they found 24 cannabis plants, as well as related apparatus such as heat lamps and timers.

The 53-year-old told officers it was for his own consumption and that he used it in cakes.

Magistrates heard the plants had a estimated street value of between £4,000 and £14,000 and that the defendant was in £70,000 of debt.

Prosecutor Jennifer Fitzgerald said: “Given the likely yield, the crown disputes that it was fully for the defendant’s own purpose.”

Ian Baker, defending, said his client used the drug for pain relief, because he was undergoing treatment for skin cancer.

He added that buying wraps of cannabis was expensive and that the equipment required in producing the drug was readily available in shops.

Chairman of the bench Eric Hilton adjourned the case for sentencing on August 18.

Morgan was released on unconditional bail.
