Grant funding boost for nature reserves

A project to improve the habitats at the Wye Valley Nature Reserves near Miller’s Dale can go ahead thanks a funding boost from The Veolia Environmental Trust.

Derbyshire Wildlife Trust have received a record £26,662 from the trust for the work at the Wye Valley reserves, which includes Miller’s Dale, Chee Dale and Priestcliffe Lees.

Funding Development Officer Peter Lee said: “This grant is brilliant news. It means we can push the project forward and get on with these much-needed improvements for the reserves.”

The main aims of the project are to improve the grazing management of grasslands, upgrade the footpath network and educate people about the reserves’ ecology. The reserves are of international importance for their ash woodlands and limestone grassland. In the spring and summer, they are carpeted with wildflowers, including several orchid species, the nationally rare Jacob’s Ladder, cowslips and wild thyme.

The Veolia Trust will now work with the wildlife trust to finalise the details of the project, including the start date, and get it up and running as soon as possible.
