Heat applied to campaign
The Future Is Orange: Sue Metcalf, Dorothy Keir, Graham Barnett, Albert Keir and Sarah Barker of the Bakewell branch of Age UK get dressed in their orange outfits and wigs as they launch the Spread The Warmth campaign against fuel poverty.
A CAMPAIGN to keep vulnerable people warm this winter is being launched at a Bakewell shop.
Spread The Warmth is a scheme by Age UK to raise money and awareness for the elderly, many of whom are unable to afford fuel during the cold months which can often lead to serious illness and even death.
It is estimated that up to 90 per cent of winter deaths are those aged 65 or over, and more than a third of pensioners will live in one heated room during the colder months to help save on fuel bills.
To highlight the issue, Age UK on Bakewell’s Portland Square will be decked out in orange- the official colour of the campaign - and selling bobbles to raise funds.
The staff will also be dressing up for the occasion this coming Monday.
Manager Sarah Barker said: “All staff and volunteers will be in orange fancy dress with lots of orange decorating the shop.
“We’re hoping to make it fun for everyone and to spread the message.”
People are not only being urged to raise money, but to donate old coats at Age UK shops, or Wilkinson stores.
