Warm Wishes: Age UK, Matlock store manageress Pat Rose and volunteer and organiser Sylvia Handley launch their Spread the Warmth campaign with bobbles and a host of gifts donated by shoppers and staff for their charity auction.

A CAMPAIGN to keep vulnerable people warm during the winter was marked at a Matlock charity shop- which took on a distinctive orange tint.

Spread The Warmth is a scheme by Age UK to raise money and awareness for the elderly, many of whom are unable to afford fuel during the cold months which can often lead to serious illness and even death.

It is estimated that up to 90 per cent of winter deaths are those aged 65 or over, and more than a third of pensioners will live in one heated room during the colder months to help save on fuel bills.

To highlight the issue, Age UK on Matlock’s Bank Road held a tombola, while staff wore the official campaign colour of orange on Friday.

They managed to raise more than £140.

Volunteer Sylvia Handley said: “We are very happy with that, we didn’t think we would make that much. It was really spur of the moment to do the tombola, but it went extremely well.”
