Heatwave warning for Derbyshire

AS temperatures soar and more heat is expected over the weekend, health bosses are urging Derbyshire residents to take care.

People are advised to avoid heat exhaustion by drinking lots of water and steering clear of dehydrating drinks such as alcohol and caffeine.

The symptoms include headaches, dizziness, nausea and vomiting, muscle weakness or cramps, pale skin, and a high temperature.

Anyone worried they may be unwell because of the heat is advised to sit somewhere cool, take a cool shower if possible or sponge yourself down with cold water.

Linda Syson-Nibbs, head of public health at Derbyshire County Primary Care Trust, said:

"The heat can be dangerous and people need to protect themselves. It is easy to avoid illness with straight forward common sense.

"People should just listen to the weather forecast and make sure they are prepared for the heat. Avoid going out during the hottest part of the day, wear a hat and loose clothing and drink plenty of fluids.

"Anyone who begins to feel unwell should contact a doctor, pharmacist or NHS Direct."

Contact NHS Direct on 0845 4647 or NHS Direct Online at www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk for advice about heat exhaustion and heatstroke.
