Hospital closed off to visitors as winter vomiting bug strikes
breaking news
HEALTH chiefs closed Chesterfield Royal Hospital to visitors after an outbreak of the contagious Norovirus winter vomiting bug spread to eight wards.
The hospital had closed Pearson, Basil, Durrant and Markham wards to visitors earlier this month following the discovery of the Norovirus but after the bug spread they took the unprecedented step of bringing in a lock down, on Wednesday, February 15.
A hospital spokesman said: “This is to try and resolve the outbreak affecting eight wards.”
The hospital revealed there had been occasions since the first outbreak this month where visitors have come into the hospital and fallen ill.
A hospital spokesman added the hospital was in “considerable danger” of not being able to function and it wanted to ensure appropriate care for ill patients.
He added: “We’ve taken this difficult decision until the outbreak is under control.”
Those with concerns can call the NHS Direct phone service and are advised not to visit surgeries.
