Increased oil thefts prompts advice campaign

HOMEOWNERS are to receive advice on ways to protect themselves from oil theft after many properties in the Dales were targeted by crooks last year.

Ahead of this winter, residents can get hold of a leaflet – compiled by police and Derbyshire Dales District Council – containing crime prevention tips on fuel tank security.

Sergeant Andy Wordsworth said: “The advice is being tested ahead of the winter months and in the wake of a number of thefts, especially from more rural properties, in the area last year.”

The leaflet provides basic information on how people can make their tanks less of a target for thieves along with additional security measures that can be taken.

They are available from most police stations and several oil providers have been given supplies to hand out when on deliveries.

There is also a supply of driveway alarms at a discounted price of £20 available for residents from police stations.

Cllr Lewis Rose said: “Funding the leaflets and driveway alarms is part of our ongoing campaign to maintain the Dales’ status as one of the safest places in the UK.”

For more information call police on the non-emergency number 101.
