Injuries at notorious blackspot

Mountain rescuers were called out twice to Black Rocks over the festive period after a mountain biker and climber suffered serious injuries.

On Christmas Eve Derby Mountain Rescue Team went to the beauty spot in Cromford to rescue a 39-year-old man.

The man, from Chesterfield, had been out for a ride when he hit a rock and was catapulted over the handle-bars, injuring his hip.

Other bikers raised the alarm and stayed with him until the emergency services arrived - then recovered his bike and took it back to the car park.

A team spokesman said: “We’re very pleased by the actions of the passing cyclists who raised the alarm and stopped with the injured man until we arrived. It’s the kind of community spirit we like to see in the outdoors.”

Derby Mountain rescuers were then called out on Boxing Day after a climber fell around 36 feet while leading a climb on a popular rock face.

The 19-year-old Derby man had been out climbing with family and friends when the accident happened. He had almost reached the top when the protection holding him to the face came away. He fell to the ground and was knocked unconscious for some time.

He was taken by the team on a stretcher to a waiting ambulance and went to Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham. A team spokesman added: “Black Rocks is one of the team’s most frequent locations for callouts. This is in part due to the large volumes of walkers, cyclists and climbers that visit the area each day.”
