Join us for flipping fun in town’s park

A pancake race will be staged in Matlock’s Hall Leys Park on Shrove Tuesday.

The lunchtime fun is being organised by a group of the town’s traders led by the Cafe in the Park, the new launched Matlock Town Team and the Mercury.

We thought it would be a great idea to get some of the traders and firms in the town to join together for some Shrove Tuesday laughs and other traders jumped at the chance.

Kate Lane, who runs the Cafe in the Park has said she will host the flipping fun and now all we need are some competitors.

We are looking for teams of four to join us on February 21 so we can start racing at 1pm and all you have to do is bring your own frying pans.

Kate is going to be providing the pancakes and she will also be laying on some warm drinks for the racers once it is all over.

We are also asking everyone to bring some pennies along to donate towards the Jubilee Jam Jars fundraiser launched by the Mercury today.

Mercury Editor Amanda Hatfield, said: “It started out as a bit of a joke but then we thought why not? Let’s have a pancake race in Matlock. We all need a bit of cheering up at this time of the year and it will be fun.

“At the same time we can raise a bit of cash towards the Diamond Jubilee avenue of trees for the park.

“As soon as we mentioned it to Kate she thought it was a great idea and Derbyshire Dales District Council is also backing it.

“I am waiting to see if they can meet the challenge and come up with a council team though! It would also be good if we could get firms like Twiggs and Sainsbury’s, some of the schools, a pub or our community police team involved.

“If it is well supported then we hope to make it an annual Pancakes in the Park event.”

If you want to enter a team email the Mercury at news@matlockmercury.co.uk or let us know on facebook.

If you can’t manage a team but want to join in the fun then just come along to watch the more people there the merrier.

We aim to fit the whole event into a lunchtime so everyone can get back to work in the afternoon.

For any updates to the event follow our Facebook page, go online to www.matlockmercury.co.uk and of course see next week’s Mercury.
