DECADES of dedication from a Darley Dale musician has led to him picking up another prestigious award.

Keith Sheldon, who landed a Mercury New Year’s Honour certificate earlier this month, has been named as Butlin’s 2012 Band Person of the Year trophy.

The 71-year-old was handed the accolade during a ceremony at the holiday camp in Skegness.

The Southbourne Avenue resident said: “It’s wonderful, I had no idea. It was a great surprise – just like it was to get the award from the Mercury because I treasure that.

“They had asked me to site near the stage and I wondered why they had asked me to do that!

“It’s my 65th year and everything is coming right, I feel so proud.”

Keith has been playing the euphonium since 1947 and still practices two hours a day.

But he has no plans to hang up his instrument yet and is looking to travel to Swansea for the international brass band summer school in the coming months.
