Less than a week left for sporty grants

Sports clubs and groups have less than a week left to apply for a cash boost in the last round of Derbyshire County Council’s Sports Action Grant scheme.

The £180,000 fund was launched in October 2011 and so far £138,430 has been awarded to groups that made successful applications for grants of up to £1,000.

Grants are available to groups that provide activities who encourage people to take part in sport, promote healthy lifestyles, encourage volunteering within sport and improve sporting performance.

Money awarded to groups has been used for building, refurbishment, improvements to pitches and training areas, new equipment, coaching courses and website development.

Derbyshire County Council Cabinet Member for Public Health Councillor Carol Hart said: “We’ve been delighted with the interest shown in our Sports Action Grants since they were launched and I’ve been very pleased to approve grants to show our support for so many local clubs and groups.

“It’s fantastic to see the range of additional activities which will be available to encourage healthy and active lifestyles to even more local people thanks to this funding.”

Applications are now invited for the third and final round which closes on Monday 10 September.

The fund, backed by Derbyshire Olympic badminton star Donna Kellogg MBE, has been distributed over 18 months through three timetabled rounds.

Recommendations are passed to the county council which makes the final decision.
