Lighting up drugs use
Police in Matlock and Bakewell hope to shine a light on drugs users and reduce crime in the Dales – thanks to a new tool.
Officers have been given ultraviolet torches which they will shine in people's noses and mouths to check for traces of cocaine, which would be invisible to the naked eye.
Anyone suspected of using the drug will be searched by officers and could face prosecution.
Sgt Dave Parker said: "The Dales is a very safe place to live and we hope these torches will act as another deterrent against illegal drug use.
"They are an innovative tool which we will use in conjunction with drugs dogs and knife arches which have already proved effective in reducing and detecting crime," he added.
The torches were trialled in Derbyshire for the first time as part of National Tackling Drugs Week at the start of June.
