A STUDENT from Whaley Bridge has been selected to go to Uganda next month to find out more about Oxfam’s work in the country.

Lydia Slack is currently studying at the Royal Agricultural College in Cirencester, and in October was made Project Manager of the Oxfam Cirencester group.

Now she has been selected to go on a “Communications and Exposure Tour” to Uganda for two weeks in February.

Lydia told the Advertiser: “I’ll be visiting some of the projects in Uganda, and then I will be reporting back to the UK all the good work they do.”

In total there will be five volunteers going out to Uganda. Four are fundraising volunteers from across the UK and the other is an Oxfam member of staff.

“The purpose of the trip is to visit some of Oxfam’s development projects and some empowerment projects for women and to collect information and get a first hand experience of Oxfam’s work,” she added.

“The Tours and Visitors Manager is Richard Tallontire who said the tours are important to have as many ambassadors across the UK who in communication can tell stories about the work that Oxfam is doing and how it positively changes people’s lives.

“I’m really looking forward to visiting Uganda and learning more about Oxfam’s work so I can come back and share my story and hopefully encourage more people to get involved.”

It will not be Lydia’s first visit to Africa. As reported in the Advertiser she spent her gap year working in Swaziland.

Thanks to the support of fund-raisers from across the High Peak, she was able to help build a house for a family of orphans while she was there.
