Marathon man’s record bid

A Buxton runner is aiming to be top of the class when he attempts to break a Guinness World Record at this year’s Paris Marathon - dressed as a schoolboy!
Terry Fowler will don school uniform in a bid to break the record for the “Fastest Schoolboy in a Marathon”, while at the same time raising cash for local cancer hospice Blythe House in Chapel-en-le-Frith.
A runner for the past 12 years, Terry, 46, is no stranger to physical exertion. He has also run and coached for Buxton Athletic Club.
His outfit, which includes a Buxton Community School blazer and a tie from his workplace Federal Mogul, has resulted in some strange looks from passers-by while training on the streets of Buxton in the run-up to race day on Sunday April 7.
Terry said: “Running a marathon is a challenge. Adding a shirt, tie and blazer makes it a harder challenge, but nothing like the challenge of dealing with cancer.”
And Terry has received support from the current record holder, Emmerdale actor Tony Audenshaw.
The New Mills-based actor set the record of three hours, 36 minutes and 51 seconds at last year’s Virgin London Marathon.
Tony said: “Running 26.2 miles in hot, uncomfortable clobber isn’t nearly as much fun as it sounds, so I’d like to wish Terry all the best in his attempt to beat my record, and encourage people to sponsor him for this great charity.”
