Matlock and Ashover: Real ale pubs scoop awards
Two top pubs are celebrating after being named the best in their areas by a real ale group.
MoCa, in Matlock, was named the Pub of the Year 2013 by the Matlock and Dales branch of the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA), while The Old Poets’ Corner, in Ashover, was given the same title by the Chesterfield and District branch of the group.
Sharne Castle, 34, who has run MoCa with business partner Paul Mosley since October 2011, commented: “We were really pleased with the news. Paul has worked really hard with the real ales and we now have a selection of six to choose from.”
The pub has spent the last 15 months building up a reputation in the town.
Peter Boitoult, vice chairman of Matlock and Dales CAMRA, said: “MoCa is a comfortable, friendly place to go and have a drink.”
The pub will be presented with its award on Thursday, February 7, at 8pm and members of the public are invited to a celebration on the night featuring live music.
Kim Beresford, who runs The Old Poets’ Corner with his wife Jackie, said: “My wife and I took over the pub nine years ago when it was really at its knees. When we first started it was just Jackie and me and one member of staff, now we have about 30 staff members including the brewery and they are all passionate about the pub.”
The Old Poets’ Corner has won numerous accolades over the years and this is the third time it has won the Chesterfield and District CAMRA Pub of the Year award.
The two pubs will now be put forward for the Derbyshire county round of the national CAMRA competition.
