Police have named a Matlock man found dead after his car is believed to have been driven off an iconic cliff top.

The body of Stephen Lythgoe was found in his black Chrysler PT Cruiser, which was found wedged between trees at the base of High Tor, in Matlock Bath,on Monday morning.

The 65–year–old, of Church Street, Matlock, was last seen on Sunday evening.

Officers made the discovery after a member of the public alerted them to car track marks that seemed to go over the edge of High Tor.

The Derby Mountain Rescue Team helped remove the body from the scene.

PC Haydn Cox, who is investigating the incident, said: “This is a very unusual incident and the investigation is at an early stage.

“It would be wrong to speculate about the cause but we are not treating the death as suspicious.

“I will be compiling a thorough file for the coroner who will hold an inquest into Mr Lythgoe’s death in due course.

“Anyone who saw anything unusual on High Tor on Sunday night or the early hours of Monday morning should contact me on 101.”
