Matlock queen

The sun shone in 1955 on 21-year-old Gloria Ballington as she was introduced as Matlock British Legion’s Carnival Queen to crowds gathered in Hall Leys Park at the start of the town’s carnival celebrations.

Pictured at the service – which began with a drum head service of dedication – are president Mr Eric Orridge, Mrs E Harris (women’s section secretary), Marion White (1955 secretary), Mrs F Wildgoose (women’s section chairman), Ursula Brookhouse (1954 attendent), Reverend C H Ferris, Mr Robert Graham, Mavis Bond, Queen Gloria Ballington, Yvonne Fletcher (1954 queen), Jean Marsden, Kathleen Antliff and Susan Handley (both junior attendents).
