Mop and pool
While the health and safety fanatics of the present day would be mortified to see activities like this in a public pool – some may consider it a refreshing blast from the past.
This photograph was taken during the festivities of the Matlock Carnival in 1954.
Arguably, the highlight for a lot of people was the swimming gala in the town’s open-air pool.
In this picture crowds are watching the much-celebrated mop fight between two youngsters.
At the point the lens clicked, it does appear that they boy with his back to the photographer was in line for a victory in what was, no doubt, a fantastic watery challenge
