Mountain rescue team’s busiest year since 1964

Rescuers have had their busiest year since 1964 having been called to 50 emergencies in 2012 so far.

Derby Mountain Rescue Team attended its 50th call out at Black Rocks, Cromford, when a 17–year–old girl fell and injured her back.

The girl had been out walking with a group and had slipped.

As team members started arriving on scene, an ambulance crew and paramedic already in attendance had managed to move the girl, who was found not to be seriously injured.

Aside from incidents involving walkers, climbers and other outdoor enthusiasts, the team of volunteers has also attended many searches for vulnerable and despondent people across the region.

Team leader, Steve Hilditch, a member of the team for 43 years, said : “It’s been another busy year for the team.

“This one breaks the previous record for callouts. I am delighted that we have been able to help so many people in distress.

“I would like to express in public my sincere thanks to team members, their families, their employers and our supporters for their unstinting contribution to this, the nation’s busiest voluntary emergency service.”
