A new chief has been appointed to oversee the management of two major Buxton arts venues.

Simon Glinn, currently the executive director of Liverpool’s Philharmonic Hall, will take on a new role from September as chief executive of the High Peak Theatre Trust, the charitable organisation responsible for the operation of Buxton Opera House and the Pavilion Arts Centre.

The appointment follows the departure last October of Andrew Aughton after 15 years in charge of the Buxton theatre, and replaces freelance arts consultant Stella McCabe who has overseen the role of interim chief executive since January.

Simon said: “After more than 11 very happy years at Liverpool Philharmonic, I am delighted to be joining the team at High Peak Theatre Trust.

“Buxton Opera House is one of the country’s most beautiful theatres, a stunning example of Frank Matcham’s work.

“There is so much potential to position the venue at the heart of the UK theatre industry and I am excited to lead the team in Buxton, a town that prides itself on its festival programme.”

Simon joined the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic as executive director in March 2003. Part of a team which manages the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and its associated ensembles, he has also been responsible for the multi-million pound refurbishment of the Grade II* listed Liverpool Philharmonic Hall, which reopens in November.

Clive Beattie, Chairman of High Peak Theatre Trust, said: “We are delighted to welcome Simon to Buxton and to the opera house and Pavilion Arts Centre. He has an enviable track record in developing both buildings and organisations, alongside establishing programming and artistic relationships with a range of world-class performers and companies.

“He joins the organisation at a pivotal moment in our history and I and the Board look forward to working with him and supporting him in the development of his exciting vision for the future.”

Mr Beattie added his thanks to the work of Ms McCabe in her interim role.
