New lease of life for historic hall
Bennetston Hall
A derelict 19th century hall near Chapel-en-le-Frith is to be restored to its former glory after Peak Park planners approved its conversion to luxury apartments.
Bennetston Hall is to be transformed into five apartments and a self-contained cottage under plans unanimously approved by the Peak District National Park Authority’s planning committee.
The former private house, youth hostel, country club and hotel, situated on the A623 between Dove Holes and Sparrowpit, was devastated by fire in the 1980s.
Puro Property Partnership, who purchased the hall at auction, have agreed to restore or re-instate most features of the original Victorian architecture.
Pauline Beswick, the authority’s member representative for cultural heritage, said: “We are dealing with a heritage asset here, which though not significant enough to be listed nationally, is of considerable local historical importance. This is an enabling development that will mean it can be restored to its former glory, and survive.”
