New wood to celebrate Queen’s 60th year

A country estate is to give the Queen an extra–special gift to mark her Silver Jubilee – new 62 acre wood.

The woodland is to be planted on Chatsworth Estate to mark Queen Elizabeth’s 60th year on the throne.

The Woodland Trust, Chatsworth Estate and the Forestry Commission have linked-up to create the ‘Diamond Wood’ as part of the trust’s Jubilee Woods Project.

Backed by a £155,000 grant from the Forestry Commission, more than 40,000 trees and shrubs will be planted on moorland adjacent to the A619 road leading to Baslow.

The Duke and Duchess of Devonshire will plant the first trees in November with local school children also being invited to take part in planting trees like oak, ash and rowan.

David Bole, Forestry Commission partnership and expertise manager, said: “The new Diamond Jubilee woodland will continue this investment in the future, whilst boosting the very low level of native tree cover in the Peak District.”

Sainsbury’s, lead corporate sponsor for the projec, will be helping to raise £1.5 million for it by donating money from products.
