New councillor for Bradwell ward

Cllr Chris Furness

Cllr Chris Furness

A Councillor has been elected unopposed to represent Derbyshire Dales District Council’s Bradwell ward.

Cllr Furness, who has now signed his Declaration of Acceptance of Office, fills a vacancy created by the death in October last year of Janet Goodison, a long-serving member of the district council who chaired one of its key policy committees.

A former member of Bradwell Parish Council, and its chairman for three years, Cllr Furness, Bradwell, was chair of governors of Bradwell Infants School for five years.

He has now retired from the parish council to concentrate on representing Bradwell at District level. In June 2011 Cllr Furness was elected to the Board of Peak District National Park as a Derbyshire Dales parishes representative, but this was automatically terminated by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) when he was elected to the district council. He was previously a parishes member of Peak District National Park from 2003-2007.

Cllr Furness lived in Bradwell until he was 18 and returned to his native village when he retired from business in 2000. His two retirement ambitions were involvement in local politics and academia. Over the last 10 years he has achieved a BA and MA at the University of Sheffield and MSc at Oxford University.

He said: “I am looking forward to the new experience of representing Bradwell residents on Derbyshire Dales District Council and to meeting and working with my new colleagues.

“I will be concentrating my efforts on the maintenance, improvement and equitable apportionment of the services which Derbyshire Dales District Council provides for its residents.”

Cllr Furness, who joins the controlling Conservative group on the District Council, can be contacted on 01433 621811.
