Nicola’s more than a match for tough race

BAKEWELL runner Nicola Dick finished one of the most physically and mentally demanding running races of 2012 and become one of only a handful of competitors able to cross the finishing line.

Part of a select group of 160 runners given the opportunity to take part in the unique and challenging Red Bull Steeplechase race, Nicola was one of only 40 gallant competitors to pass the final church steeple to finish the entire 21-mile course.

Following a difficult and often treacherous route across four stages, each competitor ran from church steeple to church steeple across the picturesque backdrop of the Peak District’s fields, woods and trails.

The Red Bull twist to the competition meant that runners battled to stay ahead of the pack to prevent being cut from the race at the end of each stage, with the slowest 120 competitors being knocked out and unable to complete the course.

Speaking about her achievement, Nicola said: “Coming down Hollins Cross at the end was so tough but I had such a great time and really hope to compete in the event again next year.”

With an overall height gain of over 1,400 metres across 21 miles of rough terrain only the fittest athletes could make it to the end of this unique race.

Nick Gracie, Adventure Racing World Champion and Red Bull Steeplechase Race Director commented: “I’ve taken part in some very challenging races in my career but Red Bull Steeplechase is definitely up there! To make it in to the final 40 runners is a testament not only to Nicola’s talent as a runner but also to her spirit and determination.”

Meanwhile, two of Nicola’s fellow High Peak Triathlon Club members have also been in action. Krissie Ivings, already thinking about next year’s Ironman event, ran the Chester Marathon.

She decided to go out harder than normal in the first half to test herself, and then reined back for the second half to go under five hours.

Stephen Greene took on the Carsington Duathlon, which always attracts a quality field for the run-bike-run format.

He finished a highly creditable 18th man to add to his steady stream of good results this season.
