Peak District visitors reminded to watch out for opportunist thieves

Police are reminding visitors to beauty spots in Derbyshire to do their bit to help deter opportunist thieves.

It is after a number of thefts have been reported from vehicles in the Hathersage area, as people head out to on walks or camping trips.

Regular police patrols are being carried out to help both to deter thieves and remind people to secure vehicles and remove valuables from display.

The latest incident happened between 6.30pm and 8.40pm on Sunday 22nd July. A Mazda was been broken into at Upper Burbage Bridge, Ringinglow Road, Hathersage and a handbag was stolen.

At around 11.30pm the previous evening (Saturday, July 21) a BMW 3 Series parked in a lay by off Sheffield Road, between the turning for Ringinglow Road and the Surprise View Car Park in Hathersage was broken into. A camera and a pair of sunglasses were stolen.

Police also received reports of two vehicles being broken into at Dennis Knoll and Stanage Edge in Hathersage during early evening on Tuesday, July 17 and Wednesday, July 18.
