Peak quarry firm helps allotment project to grow

The future is bright for a community allotment in Fairfield, thanks to the support of a local quarry operator.

Fifteen workers from Cemex paid a visit to the site at Cunningdale Allotments last week to install new footpaths, fences, gates and signs, and assist with the general upkeep of the site.

As part of a partnership ‘Growing Together’, the volunteer-run allotment project is benefiting members of mental health and wellbeing charity Grapevine, and not-for-profit community-based day service Bright Opportunities which supports people with learning difficulties.

Tracey Green, Director of Bright Opportunities, said: “Our service users benefit from the environment and open space. Many do not have access to gardens, so it is somewhere where they can go to relax and enjoy some peace and quiet. Tending to the allotment also gives a sense of ownership and achievement.”

She added: “The important thing to stress is the allotment is open to everyone, anyone who wants to get involved, as demonstrated by the title ‘Growing Together’.

The allotment is open on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday between 10am and 3pm.
