Phone crooks raided account

A Dales barmaid is warning people to be extra vigilant after thieves used a mobile phone to steal money from her account.

Gemma Lapin, of Bullbridge, was working in the Midland pub, in Matlock Bath, on Saturday evening when her purse was stolen from behind the bar.

The theft took place around 6.15pm, while the 28–year–old took some guests to their rooms.

“There were no customers in the bar and I was only gone for two or three minutes,” she said.

Gemma only realised her purse had been taken when she was closing up after 11pm.

“When I phoned up the bank to get my cards cancelled they said £20 was missing from my account.

“The bank told me mobile phones had been topped up and that was done at 6.40pm.”

She rang her mobile phone network, O2, who explained that no pin number was needed for the thieves to top up their mobile phones if they had the victim’s bank details. As Gemma’s provisional licience had been in her purse the crooks also had access to all her address details.

She reported the purse as stolen to the police, who were positive about being able to trace the mobile phones used to steal the money. Gemma now has to pay for another provisional driving licence.

To report a crime call Derbyshire Police on 101.
