Planners pave the way for Matlock McDonalds

Matlock looks set to get its first drive–thru restaurant as planners pave the way for a global takeaway giant to come to town.

An application to build a McDonalds restaurant on the former Madison’s site in Bakewell Road has been recommended for approval by planners at Derbyshire Dales District Council.

The application includes a proposal for a bulk wine unit, Majestic Wines, measuring 11 metres by 27.3 metres.

The proposed McDonalds would measure 14.4metres by 34.5metres, constructed out of brick and stone with glazing and panelling.

Opinion has been split as to whether the takeaway would be an asset to the area, bringing jobs and regenerating a derelict site, or whether it would damage local businesses and the character of Matlock.

An officers’ report into the subject said: “Whilst there is some concern that the restaurant element may have an impact on businesses in the town centre, this would be a likely occurrence if sited within the centre itself.

“In this respect, rather than seeing the proposal as a threat to the viability of the town it is considered that provision of this facility, serving both residents of the town and motorists from further afield, would help support the town and encourage visits to it.

“Given that the development would also provide for employment and be visually an improvement to the character and appearance of the site, this element so the scheme is considered acceptable.”

The district council’s central and northern area planning committee will meet at Matlock Town Hall on Tuesday, August 5, at 6pm to discuss the application and decide whether to grant it planning permission.
