Police alert as scam targets villager

Police are warning people about a scam where victims are urged to hand over their bank account details following an incident in a Peak District village.

A woman living in Tideswell contacted officers when she received a letter saying a relative of hers had died in Spain and that she was entitled to some of the relative's money.

The letter asked her to disclose her bank account details so the money could be transferred.

Pc Kevin Lowe, of Tideswell Area Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: "The lady was immediately suspicious as she does not have any relatives in Spain.

"We are concerned that some people may be duped by this scam and we would urge anyone who receives letters or emails of this nature asking for bank details to ignore them."
