Officers from British Transport Police are appealing for witnesses after a Sheffield-bound train was damaged by a group of vandals.

On Thursday, December 20, several groups of men boarded the 8.45pm Manchester Piccadilly to Sheffield service at Edale, Hope, Bamford, Hathersage and Grindleford – meeting up in the first carriage.

In total, police believe there were between 25 and 30 men on the carriage, all aged between 18 and 20-years-old.

PC Stephen Coldwell, investigating officer, said: “As the train approached Sheffield at around 10pm, members of this group became disorderly and started to cause damage to the train, smashing an overhead light and punching holes into the overhead luggage racks.

“The group left the train at Sheffield.”

Police have conducted several lines of enquiry in the local area and are now appealing to anyone who was travelling on the service and who witnessed the men’s deplorable behaviour to come forward.

PC Coldwell continued: “I would urge anyone who was on the train to get in touch, as any information about the incident, no matter how small, could really help our investigation.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact British Transport Police on Freefone 0800 40 50 40 quoting B3/NEA of 04/01/2013. Alternatively call the independent charity, Crimestoppers, on 0800 555 111
