Police issue snowball warning

Police are warning youngsters that they could face criminal action if snow and ice balls they throw during the wintry weather causes damage to cars, vehicles or pedestrians.

Since it started snowing last week, officers in the Whaley Bridge area have received several reports of local youths pelting traffic and buildings with snowballs and compacted ice.

A property in Canal Street was also damaged after snowballs were thrown at it, smashing one of its windows.

PCSO Tracy Jones, from Whaley Bridge Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: “Playing in the snow can be fun if it’s done in the right manner but when pedestrians, homes and cars are targeted, it becomes much more serious.

“If you damage someone or something by throwing a snowball or ball of compacted ice, you could be prosecuted. It can distract drivers and cause accidents, injure people who are going about their business and damage property.

“We’ve had many calls from local people complaining about the behaviour of youths in our area and we will be cracking down on it.

“This anti-social and potentially dangerous behaviour will not be tolerated and we will be out on patrol to catch those committing it.”

To report an incident, call 101 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111. In an emergency, always call 999.
