THE founder of a much-loved motorcycle club which is set to close after more than 30 years has spoken of his devastation.

Reg Hallam said there was “an awful lot of hurt” after it was announced Peak Dale Youth Motorcycle Club would close in the summer.

The volunteer-run group, which operates from Wainwrights Quarry in Peak Dale, will shut as the landowners intend to set up a new business at the site.

Mr Hallam, who founded the club in 1981, said: “Over the past 30 or so years thousands of youngsters have been involved in this wonderful group and learned how to become better and safer motorcyclists.

“There’s an awful lot of hurt and upset that three decades of hard work and thousands of volunteer hours are going to come to an end.

“I’ve treasured this group for 32 years and I’m incredibly grateful to all the dedicated and wonderful volunteers who’ve helped.

“We’ve made a lot of friends over the years.

“It’s a sad, sad time and if I could I’d do it all over again.”

Mr Hallam added there was no ill-feeling towards the quarry owner, Timothy Bagshawe.

Mr Bagshawe said his son, William, plans to set up a new business at Wainwrights Quarry.

He added: “It’s a good club and I will be sad to see it go.

“I’m very sorry about it.”

Peak Dale Youth Motorcycle Club is to close in August.

Mr Hallam said: “I just hope that when the group shuts youngsters don’t take to the streets and ride illegally.

“I’d be interested in hearing from anyone who might be able to provide alternative accommodation for the club,” he added.
