Pricey Carrots
WHEN it comes to crafty loopholes, few are more ingenious than the one these furniture sellers devised.
Mr Herbert Hardy, founder of Direct Furnishing Supplies, was fined by magistrates after contravening the 1950 Shops Act by selling furniture on Sundays.
To combat this, carrots costing as much as £500 each were on sale at Darley Dale in 1971 – making them the dearest in the world, according to Mr Hardy.
The reason for these insanely-priced vegetables is because it was perfectly legal to sell carrots on Sunday.
So, Mr Herbert and his sons Ivan, Stuart, and Keith sold the carrots and gave away free furniture.
