Probe after train splits in two
RAIL chiefs have launched an investigation after a Buxton-bound train split in two on the track.
The incident involved last Wednesday’s 5.52pm service from Manchester Piccadilly to Buxton.
The train’s two carriages separated in the Longsight area while the vehicle was in motion.
No-one was injured in the incident.
Lee Wasnidge, of Northern Rail, said: “We would like to apologise to all passengers who were unexpectedly delayed due to this incident.
“At the time of the division all safety systems operated correctly and brought both units to a controlled halt 10 feet apart. The front and rear units were secure and there was no risk to any passengers.
“Both units were withdrawn from service that evening and an investigation will determine the root cause of the incident. Once additional train crew arrived, the front train travelled on to Hazel Grove and the rear continued on to Buxton.”
The Rail Accident Investigation Branch is aware of the incident.
