Bakewell pupils are to star in a new DVD for schools to help children understand cancer and help them support any classmates with the disease.

Lady Manners School has been working with cancer charity CLIC Sargent to develop resources for schools, after student Andrew Davies, 15, was diagnosed with leukaemia in 2012.

The DVD will form part of a pack for teachers which contains lesson plans and advice to help them teach their class about childhood cancer.

In the film, Andrew, of Chesterfield, and his friends speak frankly about what it was like when he was diagnosed.

Headteacher Duncan Meikle said: “Lady Manners School is proud to have been involved in the making of CLIC Sargent’s new DVD. It can be difficult for students to know how to support a friend who is unwell, but this resource pack will provide valuable guidance to teachers and pupils alike.”

Andrew’s mum, Alison, said: “It is so important for a child with cancer to have the support of their school and classmates. Andrew loved school, so he found it really hard having to take so much time off. The school has been incredibly supportive, and he was lucky to have fantastic friends who kept his spirits up and showed real consideration for him.”
