Putting seats on feet
For years commuters have been politely asked not to put their feet on bus seats, but now they're being urged to do exactly the opposite.
A new range of basketball-style trainers has been launched made out of recycled bus seat covers – minus the lighter burns and chewing gum stains, of course.
The new shoes are the result of a collaboration between transport giant FirstGroup and Transport Recycling in Partnership and are made from 100 per cent recycled waste.
They're not cheap at 80-90, but I doubt there are any other hi-tops in a similar price bracket that can boast such green credentials. Each shoe is made from reclaimed bus or train seat fabric, together with a sole that's been manufactured from recycled tyres and a trim that uses leather repurposed from old bank chequebook wallets.
Sir Moir Lockhead, chief executive of FirstGroup, said the seat covers had been traditionally sent to landfill sites or incinerated but hoped that the new shoes "would inspire and educate others to change their perception of waste and look again at the materials in all of our personal and working lives which we throw away when they could still have some use".
In a linkup with Trees for Cities, one tree will be planted for every pair of trainers sold. To get hold of a pair, order yours from.aboveandbelowlondon.com.
