Stargazers have been treated to a rare display of the spectacular Northern Lights.

Sightings of the brightly-coloured lights - known as the Aurora Borealis - were reported over large parts of the UK last night (Thursday), including around Buxton and the Peak District.

Buxton-based photographer Mo El-Fatih was lucky enough to capture this photograph of the rare phenomenon on Long Hill.

He explained: “After having no luck at Mam Tor and Hathersage, I got lucky much closer to home, just above the Goyt Valley on Long Hill.

“It was a long and cold night, but very much worth the effort.”

The Northern Lights are caused when electrically-charged particles from the Sun enter the Earth’s atmosphere.
