A community recreation ground is set to be improved thanks to thousands of pounds of funding.

Wirksworth Recreation Ground Development Partnership is set to improve its facilities with a new building thanks to a £38,986 Community Building Grant from Derbyshire County Council.

The building will house a changing area, shower, kitchenette, storage facilities, a meeting room, study area and a viewing area.

Andrew Redfern, volunteer fundraiser, said: “More and more people are using the ground and it’s been difficult to maintain upkeep and provide the quality of facilities needed.

“We’re delighted to secure this grant. It means we can now start to give the 3,500 people who use the ground each year the facilities they deserve.”

Deputy cabinet member for health and communities Councillor Paul Smith said: “It’s often difficult for community groups to raise the amount of money they need to improve their facilities so it’s great that we’ve been able to contribute this money so that local people can benefit”.

The council launched the £1million fund in 2012, offering voluntary and community organisations one–off capital grants of between £10,000 and £250,000 for building projects or permanent equipment such as play, sports or social facilities which residents will be able to use for at least ten years.
