Residents’ plea over town land

Wirksworth Allotments

Wirksworth Allotments

A GROUP of green-fingered Wirksworth residents has launched an urgent plea to find suitable land for allotments in their town.

Dozens of people have expressed an interest in renting a growing space, but Transition Wirksworth – the group spearheading the campaign – has been stumped in finding a suitable plot of land.

Campaigner Susy Botting, of Transition Wirksworth, said: “We are looking for between one and two acres of land that is ideally within walking distance from town. Finding somewhere is proving very difficult, though.”

Chris Wardle, of Transition Wirksworth, added: “Funding is not the problem we are facing. It’s just finding somebody with a suitable plot of land who is willing to sell or lease it to us.”

Over the last couple of years the group has received support from Derbyshire Dales District Council and Wirksworth Town Council.

However, despite the council finding a few potential plots, further investigation by Transition Wirksworth found them to be unsuitable.

Mike Ratcliffe, Mayor of Wirksworth, said: “There’s no council owned land in the town that is suitable for allotments. The only option left is to find a landowner who is willing to sell or lease it to the group.

“If there is somebody willing, though, it would be a great benefit to the Wirksworth community, not only for the present generation, but those of the future too.”

Chris added: “An allotment gives a great sense of community spirit too.”
