Road checks snare drivers

OVER 50 drivers were stopped during police road safety checks in the Dales for offences ranging from using a mobile phone to the misuse of a fog light.

Matlock Safer Neighbourhood team carried out the daytime checks at Starkholmes and Cromford Hill on October 15 following concerns from residents about dangerous and speeding drivers.

Sgt Jim Thompson of Matlock Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: "These areas were chosen by residents regarding road safety. Part of our response is enforcement and education."

Offences included not wearing seat belts and using mobile phones.

And at Starkholmes seven people were interviewed regarding inconsiderate parking at school time.

There were also lighting offences including the misuse of fog lights, number plate offences and cautions given for dark window tints.

Sgt Thompson added: "Out of the drivers we stopped, only two on Cromford Hill and two on Starkholmes Road were under the age of 25."

Insp Bryan Hall said: "The checks were random and it may be insignificant that most of the drivers were over 25.

"We are mindful of the 'boy racer' issue and problems caused by young drivers in the area and that is why we are doing some further operations at night."
