Snowfall returns

Heavy snow caused another day of problems on the roads and at schools in the Dales on Tuesday.

Several inches of snow fell overnight on Monday and the driving sleet and snow continued into the Tuesday morning rush hour and continued intermittently throughout the day, causing problems for drivers.

Traffic was particularly bad in Baslow on Tuesday afternoon after a lorry jack-knifed in the road, causing long tailbacks.

The A57 Snake Pass was closed in both directions due to hazardous conditions between Ladybower Reservoir and Glossop – although it was re-opened on Wednesday morning.

Derbyshire County Council confirmed that 16 schools were either closed or opened late because due to icy conditions, staff not being able to get in and school dinners not being delivered.
