Youngsters have been doing their bit to help create a new generation of veteran trees.

Pupils from Rowsley Primary School joined forces with Derbyshire Wildlife Trust to process seeds gathered from veteran trees on the Haddon Estate and pot them up in order to grow on.

Once planted the children took the seeds to a dedicated nursery on the estate where they will visit them over the next two years to check on their progress before they are planted elsewhere.

The work with the school is part of Derbyshire Wildlife Trust’s Value in Trees project which aims to conserve and protect trees.

Louise Valantine, the trust’s senior people engagement officer, said: “Veteran trees are great for wildlife, attracting all sorts of species including bats, insects and birds.

“Even these mighty old trees don’t last forever and by gathering seeds from existing veterans we will help to ensure that we preserve the genetic stock of these long–lived trees.”
