Stargazers across Derbyshire hope for clear skies ahead of meteor shower

editorial image

Stargazers across Derbyshire will be hoping for clear skies tonight as a spectacular meteor shower promises to produce hundreds of shooting stars an hour.

Earth will pass through a trail of comet debris on Friday night and the early hours of Saturday, producing the eagerly-awaited Camelopardalids meteor shower.

A Met Office spokesman urged residents to wrap up warm, go outside, lie back and look up.

The spokesman added: “To see the meteor shower, you don’t need a telescope, binoculars or any other equipment – all you need is your eyes.

“You don’t need to look in any particular direction as meteors appear randomly anywhere in the sky.”

Parts of Derbyshire – including areas in the Peak District – will have clear skies for a time tonight, according to the weather forecast.
