Stone company applies to expand Peak District quarry

NEWS: News.

A stone company has applied for permission to expand a Peak District quarry after exhausting the current site.

Mandale Stone Company Ltd, based in Rowsley, has applied to Peak District National Park Authority for permission to extend the Sheldon Quarry, near Bakewell.

The expansion would be to the south west of the existing site and would allow the company to extract a further 69,000 tonnes of limestone at a rate of 2,500 tonnes a year.

Sheldon Quarry is described as being a ‘once-a-week’ quarry, and the stone extracted from it is of a high quality, used for architecture.

A report published as part of the application states: “The quarry predominantly serves the local ‘Peak’ market in which it is a key supplier of limestone building stone to both the new build and property restoration sectors.

“The quarry’s products are regarded as a ‘prestigious’ material and have been used in restoration works at Chatsworth House and many other period properties.”

The report added that if approved the extension would prolong the operational life of the site.

It added: “Within the existing quarry there is an existing stone cutting facility which cuts the block stone quarried at the site.

“The application therefore proposes to retain this facility for the life of the quarrying operations, together with the existing office and store buildings.”
